The fastest way to kill progress and creativity is to believe that’s just the way things are. It stifles imagination, discourages inquiry, and keeps us stagnant.

 

Last week I was watching one of my favorite movies, Interstellar, when the main character shared the line above.

 

It hit me — Matthew McConaughey is right and this is exactly why we’re facing a go-to-market dilemma.

 

Throughout history, entrepreneurs have always been the ones to aim higher, overcome the impossible, and pioneer a new future. We look up to people like Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Marie Curie, and the Wright Brothers.

 

But recently we’ve gotten comfortable with the idea that “that’s just the way things are.” In our school textbooks, politics, and worst of all, in business, we got comfortable with what we were told.

 

For the past 20+ years outbound and inbound have been incredibly effective for the SaaS world. That’s undebatable. But the mistake we made was putting too much faith in our playbooks instead of returning to our North Star: the customer.

 

I was surprised and inspired at the Nearbound Summit because every one of our 80+ speakers shared a similar sentiment:

 

We’ve gotten used to our current playbooks, to the Predictable Revenue inspired business model. But as the SaaS landscape changed and buyer behavior shifted, our current playbooks have become less effective.

 

Every one of these leaders exudes the mindset of a pioneer.

 

They know our playbooks aren’t law and are excited to answer the simple question:

 

How do we get and keep customers in today’s landscape?

 

As an industry, we’re re-learning how to be pioneers. And that’s how we’ll enter into the nearbound era, together.

 

Excited to take up this challenge with you.
